We’ve just heard some amazing news from Sari Suplido, one of our 2022-2023 international volunteers, who is now running a monthly programme of creative and practical sessions in partnership with three community organisations in Metro Manila in the Philippines.
Sari has taken many of the skills she learnt during her time at Kids Kabin and is now using them with Bukas Palad Foundation, the Bahay Maria Home for Girls, and Klasrum Ni Ming, in an after-school tutoring program for underprivileged kids.
She explained: “We want disadvantaged young people to be able to take part in creative sessions that develop confidence, help them feel safe, support them to learn new skills and build connections. So, each month we run a session with each of our three partner organisations, which also builds a bridge between social classes in the Philippines, making volunteering accessible to more people.
“Kids Kabin gave me the opportunity to lead so many sessions, giving me the project management skills, experience and confidence to take this project forward. I’m also using a similar session structure and approach, planning in time for games, creative activities, eating and discussion to give our young people the chance to design activities and make decisions themselves.”
We’re now planning to link up our Kids Kabin members in Walker, Newcastle, with young people in Manila over video call – with our first ‘breakfast-tea time party’ having already taken place. More news on this will follow!
