These 6 local residents in Blackhall, County Durham, decided that there weren’t enough positive activities for children and young people in their area. So, they’ve stood up to the challenge and started finding solutions. They’ve set up their own programme of weekly creative workshops for 5-11 year olds at Blackhall Community Centre. They’ve asked Kids Kabin to come along too and help with training and advice. Some of these activities include pottery, woodwork, cooking and arts & crafts, which have proved to be very popular and have generated much interest amongst the local community.

“I love coming here after school with all my friends. We get to do more fun things and art which we don’t do a lot of at school.” - Carter, age 8

One of the volunteers, Malcolm, says: “These sessions are very beneficial for the children as the activities are tactile and hands-on, allowing children to get more experience using new materials. While we are here to help the children, we don’t do the work for them and this allows the children to take ownership of their own work. It’s a great venue and more children are coming along each week.”

A great example of local action! Keep an eye out for more on this story.
