Following the success of the Youth Leadership Programmes in summer and autumn 2024, July 2025 saw a third programme running in Newcastle with 8 young people, aged 12-17. This group also included 2 of the 2024 youth leaders, who co-delivered training sessions and acted as brilliant role models for the new group of trainees.

The youth leaders then supported the running of a wide range of workshops during the Walker Outdoor Week at the end of July in Walker Park and Stotts Park. The Walker Outdoor Week is a long running event, run by a local youth and community organisations in the East End of Newcastle. The activities run by the Kids Kabin youth leaders attracted over 300 young people over the course of the week – with over 1500 young people taking part in the whole event.

Youth leaders relate brilliantly to young people, supporting them intuitively and effectively when they struggle with something practical. They also suggest new and different ways of doing things, breaking conventional routine and thinking out of the box.

Liam, one of the leaders, aged 13, tells us about the challenges, successes and learnings of the programme for him:

“It was really difficult when it was busy, but I didn’t give up. I realised it’s important to stay calm and be patient when you’re working with many kids. And I enjoyed meeting new people, working with the kids and felt proud when kids and parents said thank you after taking part in the activity.”
